It’s clear that Canadians care about the Amazon Rainforest and support action now to ensure that Canadian companies stop doing harm there.
Gaia Amazonas, the people of the Yaigojé Apaporis and other partners have come together here to create a campaign for action in Canada. With the help of a national Canadian pollster, the campaign conducted a major Canada-wide poll in late 2021 to collect the opinions of Canadians on issues that relate to climate change and human rights, the Amazon rainforest and its Indigenous people and Canada’s role in the mining industry in the Amazon and what needs to change. The results below show that Canadians care about these issues and want Canada to act now.
We polled Canadians and know that 81% think the federal government needs to regulate mining companies in the Amazon, and 83% think it is important that Canadian mining companies be more stringently regulated in order to protect the Amazon and its people and to respect their human rights.
In particular Canadians want to see Canadian rules in place that guarantee that the Amazon be protected and that Indigenous human rights are respected and local laws are followed. 88% said that Canadian-owned mining companies that are operating in the Amazon region should have regulations imposed on them by the Canadian government to protect the Amazon.
How important is it that the federal government changes their mandate to instead focus on …
- Protecting the Amazon forests to prevent the region from becoming a desert which would have major impact on the world’s climate and also kill the region’s economies
- Protecting the Amazon rainforest to fight climate change
- Protecting indigenous culture and rights in the region
- Balancing trade with human rights when negotiating future agreements
- Ensuring that the wishes of Indigenous communities are upheld when it comes to proposed development projects in the Amazon
Canadian-owned mining companies that are operating in the Amazon region should have regulations imposed on them by the Canadian government to …
- Make sure the Amazon forests are protected.
- Make sure human rights are respected when companies are operating abroad.
- Make sure local laws are being followed when operating abroad.
- Make sure Indigenous human rights in the Amazon region are respected.
- Make sure that Indigenous communities wishes are followed before any development begins.
While the Amazon might be far away, climate change is top of mind for Canadians also care about climate change and list climate change as their #1 issue when polled.

With the Amazon being so crucial to climate mitigation, and dear to Canadians hearts, it’s no wonder they’re eager for the government to intervene and hold companies to account.
